From a purply-red color in the glass to a nose of blueberries, dark plums, and smoked meats, this is another full Syrah. The palate finds blackberries, blueberries, smoky bacon, a pinch of thyme, and a few tannins, followed by a soft, "walk-in-the-woods" finish.
Fermentation and Aging
The Syrah was harvested in two lots from the Finley vineyard on September 11. The grapes were fermented in temperature-controlled stainless fermenters, then transferred to French oak barrels (25% new) for 10 months of aging. 160 cases produced, 13.5% abv.
In 2015 2015 we began to emerge from the drought with 22.9 inches of rainfall (80% of average). The warm summer stressed the vines early which accelerated ripening and concentrated the fruit flavors in the grapes. Harvest started with Pinot Noir on August 17, then it was a fast and furious September: Chardonnay and Viognier, then Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot, and finally Cabernet Franc on September 30. The last wines were pressed off October 12.
