2003 Syrah, Finley Vineyard

 

The Wine

The Syrah pours a dark, rich purply-red color, the nose picks up blackberry jam, eucalyptus and great campfire memories. In the mouth, the wine is full-bodied, with blackberries, figs, and smoked chops with a light sprinkling of thyme. The finish is smooth and long-lasting with figs, spices, and tannins on the tongue.

Fermentation and Aging

The grapes were picked by hand in two lots, destemmed, and fermented in small bins with hand punch down four times a day. After pressing, the wine went through malolactic fermentation and 11 months of barrel aging. 267 cases were bottled in August 2003.

The Vintage

The season was wetter than normal by 23%, with 36 inches for the season: 24" in November in December, with less than 4" in January and February, led into an early spring and budbreak. A cold and wet April, however, delayed budbreak and fruitset, but the weather turned hot in September and we began harvest in mid-September.

The Vineyard

Four acres of Syrah cuttings from nearby Maridon Vineyards planted in our Finley Vineyard in 1999. Finely, named after early settlers, is a 7-acre vineyard in the eastern slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains. The unirrigated, south-facing vineyard is on a knoll with soils that change from gravel to shallow clay as the vineyard descends from 800 to 750 feet.
